The Everyday R: Foundations in R half day course aims at gently introducing R programming to those who want to explore their data and make sense of it. The course will provide the basic building blocks to get started with R using modern tools such as the tidyverse.
R is a powerful statistical programming language but there is a misconception that it can only be used by data scientists and statisticians. Most people are not data scientists!
If you work in Excel or undertake data cleaning or produce reports, this course can help introduce you to R and assist with these tasks. The trainer has worked in various professional organisations and the course is framed around real world data sets and using R to efficiently analyse data.
Other courses can be intimidating especially for non-coders. Our training endeavours to combine practical experience and technical knowledge to help you use R in your job well.
Hung Vo is an independent at Coeus Analytics and is a senior manager at Austin Health. He understands the challenges with dealing with data in both a research and business context. He has worked on multiple business intelligence and data analytics projects in a range of industries from contact centre operations, public healthcare and higher education.
Hung has upskilled people in R programming and tailors his teaching and knows that not everyone is a data scientist or statistician. With peer-reviewed research published combined with extensive professional experience, Hung offers a good blend of skills and experience when teaching people how to apply R in real-world situations.
No experience with R is required. This course assumes no to limited experience with programming.
You will need a laptop to install the required software and an internet connection to access the learning materials.
The following topics will be covered with some additional time allowed at the end of the course to recap and ask the trainer any questions.
Topic | Description |
---|---|
Basics of R |
An obligatory introduction to what R programming is and how it has evolved. We will further examine various data types and structures that exist in R. |
Importing and exporting data |
Common data files can be imported such as csv and Excel files. You'll learn how to efficiently import data files prior to any subsequent data transformations. |
Data transformation and wrangling |
Learn how to use the core packages (e.g. dplyr, tidyr etc) in the tidyverse on how to transform your data into a "tidy" structure to enable easier analysis. |
Summarising and analysing data |
We will then move into the nitty gritty of summarising data with various functions. Our workflow for this half day course will ultimately lead you from importing data through to analysing data. |
The goal of this course is to ease you into R and show you the fundamentals of quickly importing, transforming and analysing data. You will run through examples of how the instructor has integrated R in their everyday work. This should provide practical examples for you to gradually include it into your jobs and build your level of data fluency.
You’ll receive:
Insight into how your instructor has applied R into their work to help you improve your data and reporting skills at work
A framework on getting started on how to tidy data to prepare for data analysis
Handy slides summarising the course material
Worked examples that use real world data sets for analysis
Private online access to the course material, example code and additional R references
Bonus! 30-minute private R session with the trainer!
